Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this Critical Readings course, we will focus on literary texts dealing with art and explore the ways in which art has inspired the literary imagination. Apart from discussing the role of art and the artist as reflected in a variety of genres from different periods of time we will pay attention to the relationship between literature and art by examining the interface of verbal and visual modes of representation. Emphasis will also be placed on the historical and cultural contexts in which the texts are embedded.
Students will become familiar with and able to analyse literary texts dealing with art and its role in society
- will get acquainted with theoretical texts on visual culture (including key concepts like power, representation, spectatorship or the gaze)
- will develop their writing and presentation skills
