The systematic analysis of historical maps is an important methodological approach for a well-founded interpretation of archaeological prospection data as well as a central source for settlement, environmental and landscape archaeology. Research into medieval deserted villages in particular can benefit significantly from a better categorisation of features and finds using historical maps. The course teaches the theoretical and practical basics for the in-depth systematic evaluation of historical maps in relation to selected medieval deserted villages in Lower Austria. In the practical part of the course, digitised historical maps in the vicinity of known deserted villages are interpreted archaeologically and related to the respective sites as well as to other archaeological and historical sources. If the results are of sufficient quality and significance, there is the possibility of their inclusion in the holdings of DeVill (https://devill.oegmn.or.at/), the Austrian Society for Medieval and Modern Archaeology's digitised deserted village archive.
